Understanding Circuit Breakers
Upper Circuit
When a stock rises to its maximum allowed limit in a session, it hits the upper circuit. The last traded price equals the day's high. No more buy orders can be placed above this price — strong demand with no sellers.
Lower Circuit
When a stock falls to its maximum allowed limit in a session, it hits the lower circuit. The last traded price equals the day's low. No more sell orders can be placed below this price — heavy selling with no buyers.
Circuit Band Percentages
SEBI assigns each stock a circuit band: 2%, 5%, 10%, or 20% based on market cap and liquidity. Nifty 50 stocks typically have wider bands or no circuit limits.
Data Source & Session Logic
Data is sourced from NSE's official Bhavcopy — the end-of-day file covering all 2,000+ listed stocks. If the market has closed today (after 3:30 PM IST), today's session is shown. Otherwise the previous trading day is used. Weekends and NSE holidays are skipped automatically.
